Contraband cigarettes worth $20 million found in Mississippi warehouse

JACKSON, Miss. – Authorities found $20 million worth of contraband cigarettes in a warehouse somewhere in Mississippi on Tuesday, officials announced today.

The 25 to 30 tractor-trailer truckloads of cigarettes are worth $1.5 million in state taxes and $8 million in federal taxes, State Auditor Stacey Pickering said.

Neither Pickering nor Revenue Commissioner Ed Morgan would disclose during a news conference the warehouse location or say how investigators learned of the unstamped cigarettes. Pickering said only that the matter was investigated after officials received several complaints about the warehouse.
