Bryant: Car Tag Cost Could Double In 2009

Lt. Gov. Trying To Use Cigarette Tax Increase To Offset Costs

JACKSON, Miss. – The price of Mississippi car tags could double this year, Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant said.

Bryant said the Mississippi Tax Commission told him the state could owe counties about $33 million in reimbursements for car tags by July 1. The state reimbursed counties 57 percent for tags purchased in February.

Bryant said he’s trying to negotiate with the House on using a possible cigarette tax increase to offset the costs.

“If we do not solve this problem now, it is likely that the cost of car tags could double in 2009 thereby imposing a heavy burden on Mississippi families in the middle of these tough economic times,” Bryant said.
