Miss. House votes to ban research with embryos

Associated Press – March 12, 2009 5:24 PM ET

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – State Rep. Tommy Reynolds says Mississippi’s only teaching hospital has never done, and never plans to do, research using human embryonic stem cells.

Lawmakers are trying to make sure it stays that way.

A budget bill that passed the state House on Thursday says the University of Mississippi Medical Center could not use any state money “for research that kills or destroys an existing human embryo.”

The proposed ban comes days after President Barack Obama lifted federal restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

The House and Senate will negotiate final versions of budget bills this month.

The bill is Senate Bill 3219.
