Dream home giveaway delayed

TUPELO – St. Jude has delayed the giveaway of a dream home in Fairpark until this summer, a fundraising director confirmed Tuesday.

The St. Jude’s Dream Home Giveaway is a national fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a pediatric cancer research and treatment center in Memphis.

The dream home will be built at the corner lot of Clark Boulevard and Midway Drive. It’s a two-story, 3,100-square-foot house with four bedrooms and four bathrooms.

When the promotion was announced in April 2008, St. Jude tentatively set the giveaway date for December. However, Scott Hinshelwood, associate director for the fundraising arm of St. Jude, said Tuesday it took longer than expected to get the building permits and other construction details squared away.

By the time of the groundbreaking in September, the raffle and giveaway had been postponed to April, with tickets going on sale in January.

However, Hinshelwood said St. Jude opted to push back the giveaway until June 28 to “take advantage of downtown festivals” and tourism events that he expects will draw additional people.

Tickets now will go on sale March 6. St. Jude plans to sell 7,500 tickets at $100 each. Hinshelwood added that the ticket sales are capped and he expects to sell out, judging from previous dream home giveaways in Tupelo.

The house is tentatively scheduled to open for tours May 9. It’s free to tour, and everyone who goes through will be registered for a $10,000 shopping spree at Room to Room Furniture.
